In a weird tweet, SpaceX founder Musk appeared to promote bitcoin, prompting Twitter to lock him out of his account over fears he had been hacked.
Elon Musk has been getting increasingly risqué on the internet in general over the last few months. From his low-blow twitter war with British cave diver, Vern Unsworth who criticised the tech Musk sent to Thailand to assist in the high-profile rescue of school boys who became trapped in a cave which had filled with water, to THAT image of him smoking pot on radio which will give us memes for years to come, he has definitely been taking a less than orthodox approach to online PR recently. Not that this is likely to tarnish his image with his fans.
With this in mind, perhaps the folks at Twitter should have realised his latest tweet was in fact from the man himself, instead of suspecting a hack and locking him out of his account. Here is what went down.
At around 22.30 UTC on Monday (October 22nd) Musk tweeted from his verified account “I <3 anime”. Weird yes, but not too alarming. On the same thread he later tweeted an image of an anime character superimposed over the bitcoin logo with the header, “wanna buy some Bitcoin?”
