Bitcoin Core is a term often used by Bitcoin Cash enthusiasts concerning Bitcoin, the most popular cryptocurrency in the world. Bitcoin Cash and Bitcoin can be confusing in their own right, however, this confusion is being added to by a new Bitcoin Cash offshoot called ”Bitcoin Core” – the same name used by some in relation to the widely adopted Bitcoin (BTC) cryptocurrency. Some are voicing suspicions that this might all be part of an elaborate trolling attempt, although it is currently unclear whether or not this new Bitcoin Cash is a mere hoax.
A brief history is needed to accurately understand the differences between Bitcoin Cash and Bitcoin ”Core”. The 1st of August 2017 saw a hard fork of Bitcoin, which separated Bitcoin into Bitcoin (BTC) and Bitcoin Cash (BCH). However, some Bitcoin Cash proponents (such as most notably, Roger Ver) have taken to referring to Bitcoin (BTC) as ”Bitcoin Core”, due to their beliefs that Bitcoin Cash should be regarded as the ”real Bitcoin”. Bitcoin Cash followers tend to disagree with the course that BTC has taken, arguing that Bitcoin Cash is instead following ”the true vision” of Satoshi Nakamoto, the founder of Bitcoin.
Following this, Bitcoin Cash has a hard fork of its own in November of 2017, splitting into Bitcoin Cash (BCH) and the legacy coin ”Bitcoin Clashic”. The Bitcoin Clashic chain never caught on, and was widely presumed to be more or less dead. However, it would seem that a group of developers has kept maintaining it, and the Bitcoin Clashic chain is now what is being rebranded and upgraded as ”Bitcoin Core” (BTCC).

To add to the confusion, this new ”Bitcoin Core” (BTCC) coin states that it is a fork of Bitcoin, and also argues that it follows the vision of Satoshi Nakamoto. This means that the BTCC coin is branding itself nearly in the same way that Bitcoin Cash has been making a name for itself. Moreover, the BTCC coin is already being traded on several exchanges and will be listed on coinmarketwatch.com and mcap.info.

The term ”Bitcoin Core” has, however, mainly been used by Roger Ver to refer to Bitcoin (BTC). The BTCC team has therefore recently stated that Ver is their ”biggest proponent”, and have even thanked him for ”the publicity” on the official BTCC Twitter account. It would seem that the existence of Bitcoin Core (BTCC) will now prohibit Bitcoin Cash supporters from referring to Bitcoin (BTC) as Bitcoin Core. It remains to be seen how this develops – however, the decision seems destined to cause its fair share of confusion.
