A new monument in the Netherlands is giving people an unusual look at the speed and efficiency of cryptocurrency.
This 18-meter whale in the Harlingen Harbor shoots water out of its blowhole whenever someone donates cryptocurrency. You can pay for a spray by donating to @whalefountain and watch it blow via the live stream.
It takes at least 1 Steem to make it happen, which currently costs about $1.50 USD on CoinMarketCap. It typically takes just a few seconds for the transaction to complete and for the whale to give a satisfying squirt.
Developer Roeland P. Lanparty came up with the idea.
“I was asked to write a code for the whale fountain to squirt randomly, so I thought it would be fun to integrate cryptocurrency payments and let users squirt it randomly,” Lanparty told The Next Web. “I also found the analogy between the whale fountain and the ‘whale’ slang used to signify wealth in the cryptocurrency community funny.”
The crypto whale will be doing its thing in the harbor for the next 10 years. It operates from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the Central European time zone.
