The popular cryptocurrency exchange Bitfinex says it’s back online after being hit with what appears to be a denial-of-service attack.
“The platform is under extreme load,” Bitfinex reported on its website. “We are investigating. Seems a DDoS attack was launched soon after we relaunched the platform.”
DDoS attacks are attempts to make a website unavailable by overwhelming it with traffic from multiple sources.
The issues started a few hours ago, when Bitfinex announced it was having issues with its trading engine. After a brief period of downtime, the site came back online, only to be hit with the attack.
Bitfinex is currently under extreme load. We are investigating the issue and will keep you all up to date as we learn more.

Crypto exchanges across the board went offline repeatedly late last year, as the popularity and price of Bitcoin surged.
According to CoinMarketCap, the price of Bitcoin dipped as Bitfinex went offline, and jumped to $7,577 as it came back online.
