HTC Release Blockchain Phone Named Exodus

Geplaatst op oktober 23, 2018 door Blockchain News

A new mobile phone has been announced by HTC which has been dubbed the Exodus. The phone is designed to handle blockchain applications.

However, if you want this phone there is a catch… you can only buy the phone in the digital currency.

To the naked eye, the device is just a standard Android phone however, it also acts as a node on the HTC blockchain and has its own cryptocurrency wallet called Zion. The wallet has a social recovery feature in case the phone is lost, meaning that selected contacts can vouch for the user.

Phil Chen, the CEO over at HTC said:

“Think of it as a micro OS that runs in parallel with Android. It basically is a wallet, but the wallet, what it does is hold your private keys.”

Chen sees this project as a way of taking power back from companies like Google, Facebook and Baidu; their dominance is a result of them owning all the data of their users. The Exodus keeps its blockchain functions separate from its the Android operating system. The CEO said that this is due to Google’s centralised system is fundamentally insecure.

Back in May this year, Chen said:

“I want to see a world where the end consumers can truly own their data (browsing ‎history, identity, assets, wallets, emails, messaging, etc.) without the need for ‎central authorities.”

Limited to crypto

Charlie Lee signed up as an advisor to HTC back in July this year and said that the phone will be able to support Litecoin and the Lightning Network.

You can pre-order the phone for 4.78 ETH or 0.15 BTC which is around $967 at the current prices.

Chen said:

“Selling it in crypto only and being the first to do so means we are bringing this directly to the core audience and those who will want this device — the blockchain community.”

The HTC market cap is just over $870 million was founded in 1997 as a laptop manufacturer. It has become one of the first companies to produce touch-screen mobile phones, mainly working with Windows products.
