MetaMask now supports Trezor hardware wallet – private keys more secure than before?

Geplaatst op augustus 8, 2018 door Blockchain News

On 7th August, MetaMask, an Ethereum-based browser extension announced Hardware Wallet support for Trezor, a vault that supports digital assets. MetaMask has introduced support for the Hardware Wallet in the 4.9.0 version of the browser extension.

But the fact that users have to move their funds to and fro, whenever they need to use a dApp, an exchange platform or take part in an ICO, the solution seems to be an unreasonable one, says MetaMask. Users would have to wait for the verification of the extra transactions and also pay additional network fees.

With the support of MetaMask’s latest version of the browser extension for Trezor, these issues can potentially be eliminated. Additionally, other features such as automatic token detection and ENS+IPFS [resolves Ethereum Name Service domains to InterPlanetary File System hashes] support has been included.

With the new MetaMask support, once users link their Trezor device to MetaMask, they will be able to verify their ETH and token account balance. Users will also be able to sign transactions. For instance, they can send Ethereum [ETH]; ERC20 tokens and collectibles; and organize contracts.

MetaMask has furthermore established that customers will be able to sign messages that will allow them to log in and sign up for specific dApps such as CryptoKitties.

When users connect to any of their Ethereum accounts from their Trezor devices, MetaMask will handle that account just like any other account. The dissimilarity, in this case, is that every time a user must sign a transaction, they will need to connect to their Trezor device. MetaMask will then send a request to the user to sign that particular transaction. The signing takes place exclusively in the Trezor device because of which a user’s private keys will never be disclosed.

An added bonus to the new integration is that consumers do not have to leave their Trezor devices connected all the time to view accounts and balances. In order to integrate the new update, consumers should install the latest version of MetaMask in their Google Chrome browsers [support for other browsers will be announced in due time].

Redditor, TheRatj commented:

“Interesting move to go with Trezor first. I wonder how long before Ledger integration as well. I don’t really want to go out and buy a Trezor just for Metamask.”

Vvpan, another Redditor added:

“I keep repeating that the bigger obstacle for crypto adoption is actually not TX scaling, but UX. This is a major UX step. I have a feeling that hardware wallets will be commonplace in the future.”

Last month MetaMask announcing that they would begin support for Ethereum Classic [ETC] in the near future. In June, Code to Inspire, a non-profit organization in collaboration with ‘The Bounties Network’, an outsourcing platform set up the MetaMask platform for women in Afghanistan. The move was made to make the women in Afghanistan financially stable. Presently, the MetaMask team states that they are looking forward to adding  Ledger wallet support soon.

June was a big month for Trezor as they had announced their support to Lisk [LSK] and a host of other coins prior to that, such as Decred [DCR], Bitcoin Private [BTCP], Fujicoin [FJC], Groestlcoin [GRS], Vertcoin [VTC], Viacoin [VIA], and Zcoin [BUZZ]. Trezor had also launched the Trezor model T, Trezor One and Trezor Wallet towards the end of June.
